How does ageing affect your body shape?

Ever wondered why are you seeing changes in your body shape as you age? Well, though these changes are unavoidable, your lifestyle choices may slow or speed the process.

The human body is made up a few components mainly: fat, lean tissue (muscle and organs), bones and water. After the age of 30, people will start to lose lean tissue. Your muscles, liver, kidney, and other organs will start losing some of their cells. This process of muscle loss is called atrophy. Bones will also start to lose their minerals and become less dense. Tissue loss reduced the amount of water in your body.

Furthermore, the amount of body fat goes up steadily after the age of 30. Older people tend to have 1/3 more fat as compared to when they were younger. Fat tissue being built towards the center of the body, including around the internal organ. However, the layer of fat under the skin gets smaller.

The tendency to shrink in height occurs among all races and sex. Height loss is due to the aging changes in the bones, muscles, and joints. One will typically lose about 1 cm every 10 years after the age of 40 and even more rapid after the age of 70. However, it can be prevented by having a healthy diet, staying physically active.

With lesser leg muscle and stiff joint makes movement harder, excess body fat and changes in body shape can affect one balance making one more prone to falls.

However, the changes in total body weight varies for men and women. Men often gain weight until the age of 55 before starting to lose weight later in life which may be relatable to the drop in male sex hormone testosterone. Women usually gain weight until the age of 65 before losing weight. Weight loss later in life occurs because fat replaces lean muscle tissues and fat weighs lesser than muscle. Diet and exercise habits does play a large role in one’s weight changes over their lifetime.

Lifestyle choices can affect how fast the aging process take places. Some lifestyle choices to include to reduce age-related body changes are:
